James J. Richards

James J. Richards represents clients in complex matters involving all aspects of family law, including asset valuation, spousal and child support, child custody, abuse prevention orders and marital agreements.  He has successfully settled and tried many complex matters in the Probate and Family Court as well as civil and criminal proceedings in jury and non-jury matters in the District and Superior Courts. He has successfully argued matters at the appellate level.

Mr. Richards has regularly served on continuing education panels and bar association committees in the area of family law and trial practice and procedure.  He has served on the adjunct faculty of Suffolk University Law School and he authored a chapter on child support in the 2016 LexisNexis Practice Guide: Massachusetts Family Law.  The Chief Justice of the Probate and Family Court has appointed him to serve on several state-wide committees, including the 2018 Child Support Task Force and the Probate and Family Court Bench/Bar Committee on Rules, of which he has been a member since 2004.  Mr. Richards has been recognized by his peers for inclusion in Naifeh and Smith’s Best Lawyers in the area of Family Law.

Prior to joining Lee & Rivers LLP, Mr. Richards was a partner at two prestigious law firms, a mid-sized firm where he founded and led a family law department for several years and a small firm where he practiced family law and criminal law.  Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Richards served as a Judicial Law Clerk in the Probate and Family Court.  Over the span of his career, Mr. Richards has engaged in significant volunteer work.

Mr. Richards is admitted to the Bar of Massachusetts, the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States of America, and the United States District Court, District of Massachusetts. Mr. Richards is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts (cum laude) and Suffolk University Law School (cum laude).
